Principal's Corner

Dear Parents,

We graduated our second class of fifth graders last night. We wish them well as they continue onto middle school next year! We'd like to thank the following graduation committee members for their hard work to pull off a wonderful ceremony: Andrea Wronski, Angie Camp, Deborah Kim, Deepti Sayal, Julia Shin, Nancy Pederson, Kirsten Person-Ramey, Kyla Howard, Macita Regnier, Natasha Amelchenko, Peggy Metz, Susan Muly, Zeina Husseini, and Ravi Prakash.

I'd like to thank our parents for your on-going support of our school, staff, and your children. I also thank our staff and students for all of their hard work this year!

We hope that everyone has a wonderful summer. Please be watching for a newsletter to be emailed later this summer with important information.

We look forward to seeing everyone at Orientation Day on Wednesday, August 8th and on the first day of school, Monday, August 13th!

Congratulations FSA ES Science Olympiad Winners!

Fulton Sunshine ES participated in the Elementary Science Olympiad State tournament at Kennesaw State University on Saturday, May 12th. There were around 1,280 elementary students representing 64 teams overall in Georgia. They competed in 18 different events. Our kids have done a wonderful job despite that it's their first year in Science Olympiad. The results are listed below:

Congratulations Cheetah Cup Math Competition 1st Place Winners!

220 students representing, 23 schools participated in the 3rd Annual Cheetah Cup, a Math Olympiad Compeition for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders.  Held on Saturday, April 21, 2012 and hosted by the Creek View Elementary Academic Bowl Team, students competed for awards in both team and individual categories.  The students had to solve 20 clever, engaging, and challenging problems on a variety of mathematical topics. This produced an exciting atmosphere for students and teachers alike.

The competition was fierce, and students used many different strategies to tackle the problems. Tie-break questions were necessary to determine all individual prizes.  All participants are to be commended for their enthusiastic and positive acceptance of the challenge to compete. Special congratulations go to our team and individual for their outstanding performance:

Congratulations Vinod-Ruppa!

Congratulations to 1st grader Vinod Ruppa-Kasani for doing an excellent job with his project, Two Mice and a Dragon, at the GA State Media Festival. We wish him good luck as he continues on to the International Student Media Festival.

Last Day of Clubs Friday, May 11th

Don’t forget that all clubs will end on Friday, May 11th.   There will only be one carpool after school dismissal for the last week of school.

Fulton Sunshine Academy 2nd Place at State K3 Team Championship

On March 17, 2012, players from the Fulton Sunshine Academy Elementary Chess Team attended the annual State Championship sponsored by Georgia Chess Association. Our K-3 team players played due to the success of the team in the recent regional tournament, which qualified them for the State Championship. We would like to recognize the hard work of our students and achievements throughout the last couple of months in the Regional Tournament as well as the State Championship.

The following players had much success at the Regional Tournament where they placed 2nd, and then qualified for the State Championship:

Fulton Sunshine Academy Elementary Chess Team did an amazing job again in the State Championship, where we tied for the 2nd place.

Clubs & Tutoring Canceled for Monday, April 9th- Wednesday, April 18th

We will not be having clubs or tutoring for students Monday, April 9th – Wednesday, April 18th, due to CRCT testing. We will have only 1 carpool on those days at school dismissal time. Our After School Program (ASP) will be open until 6PM on all of those days. The fee of $8/hour or $200/month still applies for those days.

If you normally send your child to a club on any of those days and will instead send your child to ASP, please email Ms. Astwood at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to let her know so that she can staff ASP appropriately.

Clubs will resume Thursday, April 19th. The last day of clubs for this school year will be Friday, May 11th.

Congratulations Fulton County Media Festival Competition Winners!

3rd-5th Grade CRCT Begins April 9th week

Statewide CRCTs will be administered for all 3rd-5th graders Wednesday, April 11th-Wednesday, April 18th. Please do not schedule any morning doctor's appointments during those dates for your 3rd-5th grade children. Please make sure that your child arrives at school ON TIME, eats a good breakfast, and is well rested. Any student who arrives after testing has begun will be sent to the Media Center during testing and will have to take it on a make-up day. In the interest of keeping down the general noise level in the building, NO visitors will be allowed into the building during the testing time. There will be no TAG classes Monday, April 9th – Friday, April 20th. The testing schedule is listed below:

International Heritage Festival Ticket Sales

We have started ticket sales for the upcoming International Heritage Festival on Saturday, April 21st.   You may get an order form here that can be filled in and returned to your child’s homeroom teacher, along with payment to receive tickets.   Be sure to invite and sell tickets to your families, friends, and neighbors!

 

Our Panda Has a Name

Congratulations to Faraz, in Kindergarten, and Katarina Amelchenko, in fifth grade, for entering the winning name of Sunny for our panda! Both Faraz and Katarina get to receive a stuffed panda.

The FSA ES Tech Fair Team competed at the Fulton County Tech Fair Competition last Saturday.

Our team won 2 first places, 3 second places and 1 third place.

Congratulation to FSA ES Tech Fair students!

Congratulations 2012 Northern Metro Atlanta Regional Chess Tournament Champions!

Two chess teams from our school, (K-3) and (K-5) competed in the 2012 Northern Metro Atlanta Regional Chess Tournament last Saturday. The K-3rd grade team won 2nd place and K-5th grade team won 5th place.

The winning K-3 team included Yush Balaji, Ahmet Cetin, Nishanth Chandran, Pranav Devalapalli, Dennis Green, Yashad Gurude, Praneeth Kota, Purvi Nandakumar, Akhil Posa, Ani Purohit, Vinod Ruppa-Kasani, Siddharth Vijayasankar, Alex Xu.

Hakan Aktas, Varad Gurude, Matthew Kennedy, Nischal Pawar, Sahil Posa, Vishal Vijay, and George Ye were members of the winning K-5 team. Job well done FSA ES Chess Champions!

Congratulations Nithya Mahakala!

Our school spelling bee winner, Nithya Mahakala, competed last night in the Fulton County Schools spelling bee at Mount Olive Elementary School. She placed tenth out of 72 students.   We are so proud of her!

Congratulations Cyber Pandas!

Our 4th grade rookie robotics team, the Cyber Pandas, competed in the FIRST Lego League at the Wheeler Regional qualifier tournament on Saturday December 10th.  The Cyber Pandas won the THIRD PLACE CHAMPIONS AWARD for best overall achievement in four categories and will go on to represent FSA at the Super Regional competition in mid-January. They competed against 24 other teams ages 9-14. Judges said they embodied everything that is the FIRST Lego League (FLL).

Job well done... Cyber Pandas: Andy, Izaac, Jere, Kaden, Manasi, Pratham and Sai!!

FSA ES Students at FLL Robotics Competitions

Congratulations Team Pandamonium! Our 5th grade FLL Robotics teams, Pandamonium and Roborockers, competed in the First Lego League at the Gwinnett Open on Saturday 12/3.  Team Pandamonium won two 1st place trophies for Robotics Competition and Best Mechanical Design.  They competed against other middle schoolers and came out on top.  Job well done... Team Pandamonium; Aditya, Joe, Sarah, Tyler, Vincent and Vibhu and Team Roborockers Eemil, Charles, Braden, and Mihir!

Please be aware that we follow the Fulton County School calendar, so if Fulton County Schools are closed, we are closed too.   As we are getting into that time of year when wintery precipitation can cause school cancellations or delayed school openings, we’d like to remind you to listen to local radio or TV stations for any advisements about Fulton County Schools.

ASP Program

FSA Elementary Administration and Staff are making every effort to continually improve the After School Program in order to best serve the safety and well-being of each student.  For your convenience and for the safety of the students, we have implemented a method for parents/guardians to contact the ASP program directly.  You may contact the ASP staff between the hours of 2:30 pm and 6:00 pm at (404) 913-1494 to notify them of any changes or incidents that would impact your student(s).

Congratulations Alex Xu!

1st grader Alex Xu from Ms. Jalovick's class took top honor at 2011 Georgia State Grade Level Chess Championship. Over 300 students competed in the event held at Campbell High School on October 15th. Alex turned in an amazing performance and won first place in the first grade section on his 7th birthday! Congratulations Alex!
